Let the Spirit control your mind

So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

Romans 8:6

Well, first off we need to understand that when Paul is talking about death and life he is not talking only about our life on earth. He is talking about our eternity, hell and heaven. If you let the sinful nature control your mind, then you will fall into sin which leads to death. However if you let the Holy Spirit renew your mind and be the one that makes the decisions this will lead you to eternal life. Let your mind be renewed by the Holy Spirit. So, how do you know if you are letting your sinful nature control your mind? Well, if a thought comes into your mind and you know that you shouldn’t be thinking that, but still you enjoy it and keep thinking about it then you are letting the sinful nature control your mind. However, if the Holy Spirit is controlling your mind then whenever a bad thought comes into your mind you will reject it and start thinking of good things (holy things). The Bible says that if anything that is good, pure, holy… think about these things. Therefore, don’t let satan take a lead, every time something bad goes through your mind reject it and ask the Holy Spirit to control your mind and think about heavenly things. Keep fighting the good battle and persevere. God bless you all

But in the verse before it says “Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit”
So if I am thinking about sinful things it must mean I am not controlled by the Holy Spirit.
I have asked the Holy Spirit to control my mind but this doesn’t seem to be happening – so the question is “How do I ensure I am controlled by the Holy Spirit?”.

Hey Ken, I understand your question. In my honest opinion I think the problem is about what exactly does “think” means in these passages. Is it just when something pops into your head or is it choosing to think something. What I see in my life is that we are tempted in our minds. We are never going to stop being tempted until we are with Christ in His glory. The main way that we are tempted is in our minds with random thoughts that come and go. The question is if you are going to give in to those thoughts, or if you are going to reject it. I have had a real fight with these things. And what always comes to my mine is God telling me “Through your weaknesses I’m strong.” Which means, you are going to be tempted in many ways, but with the help of the Holy Spirit you will prevail.” At the end, we are going to be tempted in our minds with sinful thoughts, the question is if we are going to give in to those thoughts or if we are going to reject them through the power of the Holy Spirit.

This blog strikes my interest because you are hitting on a very important topic, but you just barely grazed the surface of it. You see you are exactly right that temptation occurs in our minds and resistance is absolutely essential. But like you said the word “think” is the active word there. The scriptures speak of the “way that seems right to a man” and His “ways are higher than ours.” Way is the critical thing. There are three things wrong with a man and those are the things that he does, the things that he thinks, and the Way that he thinks. The Holy Spirit desires to revise our way of thinking. That is not limited to what we think, but extends into how we think. We have the mind of Christ…but how is that practically worked out. We are not now suddenly all knowing are we or are we more perfect minded….no our minds are being actively conformed into his Mind. He has the thoughts and the reasonings within His mind that are righteous reasonings full of life and faith and love. Do you know what holy thoughts are….Holy is by definition set apart….Holy thoughts are those thoughts that are entirely and comprehensively other than the thoughts that are in a man, they must belong to Christ. He is wholly other than us and we cannot touch a holy thought of His without coming through Him. So this practically works it’s way out when we let the Holy Spirit through the scriptures examine our way of thinking and we start to see His way. When we begin to see His way we should let it effect our hearts, and we will begin to think in His way, our thoughts and our actions fall into place. Now, I have only got you started on that. There is much more to be delved into along that vein. His mind is full of depths of things for us to search and go into and we will find it to be like a vast ocean that we cannot see the end of. That is the way of the renewal of the spirit of the mind.

^^^ Amen, and thank you Eric. In reality, every single topic that has to do with God is extensive. Mostly what I have been doing is writing for the most part short “extensions” on the verses, not a full out “sermon.” I agree with everything that you say and is great to get in contact with other Christians on this blog. Feel free to comment on anything. :) God bless you

This is neat! The fact that a discussion as this is going on…I am constantly debating the fact that our thoughts through out the day and most importantly in the morning as you rise up will shape your entire day and people do not get it. If you are in bed with your spouse and do not begin by thinking God first and then your spouse, the day has been already started on a bad foot. The scripture is telling us a lot about love and we re missing it. If we truly love God with all our hearts mind and soul, keep our hearts fixed on thins eternal, I believe it will be next to impossible for us not to worship and honor Him with our minds, spirit, body, etc. lets also keep pride in check! When we are told or made aware of the area we are not committing our lives, lets make the necessary adjustments to see thins the Godly way.
